This is a multimedia dictionary of about 6,000 entries.
It is intended for children between the ages of 8 and 12 and supplements the Greek language learning method based on the two computer games, A Knight in the Castle of Letters and A Knight in the Castle of Words.
Each word listed in the bilingual dictionary is followed by examples of usage, by grammatical information (part of speech, inflectional forms, hyphenation), with a translation in Turkish, derivative and compound words, and illustrations, when appropriate.
The dictionary has two main goals:
- to help the children understand the vocabulary used in new books and computer-aided systems, issued within the program ‘Education of Muslim Minority Children’.
- to operate as autonomous tool for learning Greek as a second language.
The CD-ROM contains pronunciation of each entry in Greek. ILSP’s morphological analyzer has been integrated into the system. The child has the possibility to type a word, which can be automatically corrected, if misspelled. In addition, each word type is grammatically recognized and connected to the initial lemma.
The dictionary is also available in print version, so it can be used by children who do not have access to PCs.
The dictionary, which has been approved by the Pedagogical Institute, has been distributed to the pupils of the four upper grades of elementary schools.
