The Project organized, as soon as it launched and under severe tight time-constraints, a series of research initiatives in order to map the “field” where it would operate. These research studies concentrated on examining the special problems of the Minority primary schools, on the characteristics of the pupil population, on the causes of school failure, but also on understanding the dividedness of the local society. More specifically, the research activities completed during this period were the following:

 

  • Compiling an exhaustive bibliography of Greek and Turkish sources on the Minority.
  • Studying in detail and writing the legal framework regarding the education of the Minority.
  • Carrying out a census of the pupil population, by Minority school, and by town or neighborhood, and an examination of the “socio-educational” identity in each of these locations.
  • Carrying out a census of the teachers of Minority schools, and aggregating all the data gathered, in order to draw a picture of the “socio-educational” identity of the entire body of these teachers.
  • Interviewing a sample of teachers to learn about how they view their role as educators, and their opinion on the school failure of a large portion of Minority pupils.
  • Gathering and analyzing material on the Special Pedagogical Academy of Thessaloniki (EPATh).
  • Conducting ethnographic studies on (a) the stance of the Minority population toward its ethnic minority identities and the Greek citizenship identity, and (b) the attitude of the Minority family toward education and school choice.
  • Conducting another ethnographic research on the everyday reality of Minority schools: Observing the school life, the pedagogical practices, the behavior and the attitudes of pupils toward the educational process.
  • Conducting quantitative (collecting statistical data), and qualitative research (interviews) on Minority students who study at Greek universities.
  • Carrying out research on the (Turkish-speaking) Muslim population of Rhodes and its educational characteristics.
  • Doing a census of the Muslim pupils with Greek citizenship who go to primary and secondary schools outside Thrace – in other parts of Greece.
  • Studying in detail the cross-cultural schools of Sapes (a town in Thrace).
