-- For the 7th and 8th Grades

This material is fully consistent with the general goals of the official Analytical Program for the Greek Literature courses of the 7th and 8th grades, and is in no way intended to replace the current curriculum of these courses. Its particular aim is to suggest a new method to organize these classes, where texts from the school anthologies that are currently used can coexist with new texts specially chosen to address the needs of Minority pupils.

For each grade, three teaching units have been prepared:

7th Grade:
     (a) Words and Pictures: The Comics;
     (b) Poetry and Song;
     (c) Child Play and Games in Literature.
8th Grade:
     (a) The Travel: Life Experience and Reading Experience;
     (b) The Adventure of Coming of Age;
     (c) Picture and Speech: The Audiovisual Narrative.

The prepared material includes:

  • Two books for teachers:

Teaching Suggestions for the Literature Course, 7th Grade, Athens, 2004.
Teaching Suggestions for the Literature Course, 8th Grade, Athens, 2004.
After a general introduction about the objectives and the teaching methodology of the new material, the books present in detail each teaching unit (goals, skills to be developed, texts, activities for pupils, and bibliography). Each unit also contains suggestions for the dramatization of certain texts, plus some additional material, such as a text for the techniques used in comic strips or in films.

  • Two files (dossiers) for pupils with texts from the Greek Literature:

Texts for the Literature Course, 7th Grade.
Texts for the Literature Course, 8th Grade.
Each file contains three issues that correspond to the three teaching units described above. The files are not anthologies and the teacher is not obligated to use them; the files were prepared just to facilitate the classes in those schools that have no libraries. The texts that are recommended for each unit are much more than those included in the files. It is up to the teacher to decide which texts from the files he/she will use and which ones available at the school library are suitable for his/her pupils.

-- For the 9th Grade

Scientific Managers: Venetia Apostolidou, Eleni Hondolidou

In the 9th grade the Analytical Program (for all schools) includes (a) the teaching of the history of the Modern Greek Literature, and, consequently, (b) the reading of texts from all the periods of its history. The objective of the material produced by our Project is to help teachers and pupils approach the texts of the new official textbook (Texts from the Modern Greek Literature, 9th Grade – in use since September 2006) in ways that would (a) emphasize the cultural parameters of the texts, and (b) minimize their language difficulties. These difficulties are especially acute in this course, because many of the texts are from older periods.

Our material is based on the Ministry’s official Analytical Program, but it takes the special characteristics and problems of Minority pupils into account.

The teaching recommendations and suggestions developed for the chosen texts from the official book include the following attributes:

(1) Emphasis on the cultural character of the texts, i.e., their relationship with the era and culture in which they were written.

(2) Comparison of the texts with other texts, both from the Greek Literature and from that of other countries, especially from the Balkans, so as to show the linkage between neighboring national literatures, and therefore between neighboring cultures to which the literatures belong.

(3) Enrichment of the texts with audio-visual material (photographs, videos, music, and songs), which would make these texts more accessible to pupils and easier to understand.

(4) Emphasis on the interdisciplinary approach and on the connection of this course with the other ones taught at school.

(5) Emphasis on the development of pupils’ research skills and on teamwork.

The material consists of one book for the teacher and one file (dossier) with texts and audio-visual items for the pupils.

(The Greek Literature materials for the three grades – 7th, 8th, and 9th – of secondary school have been approved by the Pedagogical Institute and have been published by OEDB, as part of the Ministry’s official educational materials.)
