Supplementary Educational Material for the Teaching & Learning of the Turkish Language

This book has been produced having in mind the educational needs of the Minority children of Thrace, whose mother tongue is Turkish. It was written to be used as a support or supplementary material, in addition to the already existing textbooks of for the Turkish language classes. Its novel aspect that makes it exemplary is that it is based on the creative contribution of the Minority and that it gives due regard to the cultural wealth of this community.

  1. special characteristics of the book:

(1) It is the first time that Minority Thracians, with the contribution of two members of the Istanbul Greek Minority, wrote a school book of their own. The book, therefore, could be seen as an indication of the respect of the Project for the Minority.

(2) All the texts included in the book were written in Turkish by members of the Minority. The book hosts forty-eight Minority writers, poets, and intellectuals.

(3) The book contains many kinds of texts (news-items, comments, and literary texts) that have been collected from almost all the Turkish-language print media (newspapers and journals) that are published in Thrace. In other words, the book reflects, to a great degree, the cultural world of the Minority.

(4) Each chapter is accompanied by photographs that depict the culture and the historical legacy of the Minority. The photos of a medrese (or madrasah - an Islamic school), of a mosque, of a school, are all materials that help the young readers develop connections with their environment, and such connections open the doors for a better future.

(5) The authors are minority members. The texts stem from the reality of the Minority. They refer to its daily life, to its traditions, and to its problems, and they exude an understanding of this daily life, a love of traditions, and an empathy for the problems.

The book is intended for secondary school pupils. However, it can also be used for high school pupils, in which case the texts and the poems would require a deeper examination and the questions more detailed answers. The book can furthermore be considered an educational material for younger children, provided the texts are approached in a simpler way. The texts have been selected with a view to show the past and the traditions of the Minority, and also its everyday life. There is, therefore, frequent mention in them of the problems of the community, together with the efforts to open windows to the outside world, and thus to combat the community’s introversion and closed character. The grammar concentrates on practical issues, and deals with mistakes and aberrations that are common among pupils of that age. The illustrations and the photographs depict the environment that is familiar to the pupils.
