This basic grammar of the Greek language is mainly intended for non-native speakers who learn Greek as a foreign or second language and whose knowledge of this language is at a medium level. However, it can prove useful for elementary- or advanced-level speakers or even for native speakers of Greek.
It is a concise reference book that includes information for the phonology, the writing system, the morphology, the syntax, the semantics, and the pragmatics of the Greek language. The overview of the shapes and formations is accompanied by a description of their grammar and/or their communicative function, and by many examples and plenty of illustrations.
The goal of the book is to focus on the fields where the grammar of the Greek language presents special difficulties for non-native speakers, and thus to make it easier for them understand and produce speech. The descriptions, therefore, are concentrated in the points where the morphology, more specifically the conjugation, corresponds to basic language functions. There is also selective mention of some pragmatological conditions that determine the use of alternative formations.
The Basic Grammar of the Greek Language has been approved by the Pedagogical Institute.
