Conference: “The Lausanne Treaty 90 Years Later: The Regulations Regarding Minorities”
In Komotini, on November 22 & 23, 2013.
The Project for the Education of Muslim Minority Children in Thrace (PEM) and the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) co-organized a conference entitled "The Lausanne Treaty 90 Years Later: The Regulations Regarding Minorities". The conference was held in Komotini, on November 22-23, at the event hall of the Administration Building of the Regional Authority of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The objective of the conference was not to analyze the way Greece and Turkey treat their minorities in both countries, but exclusively to discuss how minority-related regulations have been implemented or applied in Thrace. The participants/presenters were university professors, representatives of government agencies and institutions, politicians and journalists from the left to the right of the political spectrum. Minority and Majority members took part together in this scientific conference, publicly exchanged their views on the regulations of the Treaty pertaining to Minorities and the rights of Greek citizens who are members of minority in Thrace. In the society of this region, events such as this conference that give members of the two communities an opportunity to discuss and reason together are more than rare.
